How to Choose a Strong Research Topic
Choosing a research topic is one of the most important steps in your academic journey. A strong topic can make your project easier, clearer, and more enjoyable to complete. Unfortunately, many students either rush this step or pick topics that are too broad or too complex.
A strong research topic should be relevant, focused, and manageable. Start by considering your area of interest—what aspect of your field genuinely excites you? Research becomes easier when you care about the subject. Next, narrow down the idea. Instead of selecting “Social Media Marketing,” refine it to something like “The impact of short-form video marketing on small businesses in Nigeria.” A refined topic gives direction and makes data collection easier.
It’s also important to ensure enough existing literature is available. A quick search through Google Scholar or your school library can save you a lot of stress later. Lastly, consider feasibility: Can you collect enough data? Do you understand the scope? Will you meet your submission deadline?
When you choose wisely, the rest of your project flows smoothly.
